Read full reviewįeatures actors: Harrison Ford, Kelly McGillis & Lukas Haas This is one of the greatest films of the modern era, and even greater on this DVD. With all these extras, it's like getting to see "Witness" for the first time again. The doc features brilliant and educational observations by Peter Weir, Photo Director John Seale, and the major stars. This special collector's edition is chock full of features: enhanced widescreen, trailers, an extended deleted scene, and a 5 part documentary "Between Two Worlds: The Making of Witness" which runs almost as long as the film itself. The classic passage "Building the Barn" could stand on its own and sometimes does. In perfect accompaniment to changing moods, the music transitions from haunting to amazement to suspense to danger to pain and healing to triumphant to sad to joyful with many steps in between. Tying everything together in seemingly effortless fashion is the music of Maurice Jarre (who also scored Dr. Not to mention the romantic tension between John, Rachel, and neighbor Daniel (Alexander Godunov). Other highlights include a reference to golden oldies music as John and Rachel dance to Sam Cooke's "Wonderful World". Differences explored include everything from the lack of modern technology in the Amish world to vanity to the tourists to belief regarding firearms.Īn awe inspiring event is the great community feeling protrayed by the barn raising. Many of these instances serve a secondary purpose of showing contrasts between the Amish and "English" communities. Then there are many humourous moments to provide comic relief in a mostly tense movie. (That locale, incidentally, has many railroad attractions). Of course, there's scenic Lancaster County and the train trip. Although a crime puts the story in motion, most of the film deals with Philly detective John Book (Harrison Ford) g oing into hiding in the Amish community in Lancaster County to protect Samuel as well as himself. ![]() However at the impressive Philadelphia train station the plot becomes serious when Samuel, by chance, observes the brutal murder of an undercover police officer. Recently widowed, Rachel Lapp (Kelly McGillis) and young son Samuel (Lukas Haas) begin what starts out to be a serene Amtrak trip from Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Baltimore. That Peter Weir eventually directed the movie is quite a blessing, as I can't imagine any other director having done so well. Now that "Witness" has stood the test of time since its 1985 release, it's surprising to learn that many in the industry originally shunned the project saying it was just "another cop movie". This means that whoever believes in him will live forever, even after they die. In verse 25, Jesus tells Martha that he is the resurrection and the life. Jesus is the resurrection and the life.We can trust that Jesus has power over all things, including death. Jesus knew that Lazarus was going to die, but he also knew that he had the power to bring him back to life. And we know that he loves us too! He cares about our problems, our joys, and our sorrows. We see in verse 5 that Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. Wow! What an amazing story! Lazarus was dead for four days, but Jesus raised him back to life! Let’s take a closer look at what we can learn from this passage: Application For KidsĪs children go through this story together as a class, ask them questions such as: How did Martha feel? How did Mary feel? What did Jesus say when he saw them? How did their attitudes display faith? Then ask them how they can apply these attitudes of faith into their own lives today? Encourage them to pray whenever they face hard situations or doubts so they can believe like Mary & Martha had faith-trusting fully in God’s power at work within them! It also teaches us about faith: just like Mary & Martha had faith that Jesus could still do something despite the long journey it took for Him to get to them and despite the fact that their brother was already dead-we must have faith too! No matter what situation we are in or what obstacles stand before us-we must believe and trust in God’s absolute power at work in our lives. We learn from this passage that if we trust in Him, He can do miraculous things in our lives as well-He can bring us back from spiritual death just as he did for Lazarus. The main point of this lesson is to show kids how great our God is – He can do anything! No matter how bleak and hopeless a situation may seem, He has ultimate authority over all things. He asked them where they had laid Lazarus (verse 38), and when they showed him, he ordered the stone rolled away and called out loudly “Lazarus come forth!” (verses 39-43) Immediately after saying this, Lazarus came out alive! This miracle proves that nothing is impossible for God and that death has no power over Him. When Jesus arrived in Bethany, he was moved by their grief and sorrow (verse 35). Martha believed that if Jesus had been there, he would have been able to save him Mary believed that even now, Jesus could do something about it (verse 21-22). In verses 1-16, we see different people reacting differently to the news of Lazarus’s death. John 11 tells the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. ![]() Troubled that she is dead before anyone knows her it is why she haunts.
